Our legacy

A Race for Everyone

The Tweed Enduro actively encourages participation from all abilities, and is happy to accommodate those with additional needs or access requirements. Whether you are a seasoned para-athlete or a first timer looking to have a crack, please get in touch with our friendly team.

Our History

The Enduro was created in 2015 as a community sporting event that provided local triathletes a pathway past the Olympic distance. Designed to fulfill the athlete’s wishlist, the Enduro gives a personal approach and celebrates athlete accomplishment for many who are competing on the long course for the first time.

The Tweed Enduro continues the proud tradition of fundraising for the Cabarita Surf Life Saving Club and Pottsville Beach Neighbourhood Centre, and a number of other community groups including Tweed Raiders JRL, Pottsville Cricket Club, Murwillumbah Venturer Scouts, and Pottsville Men’s Shed. Our goal this year is to raise $7000 for these local groups. Additionally we are seeking to employ $4500 in labour services directly from the Tweed.

The Enduro is clearly a Pottsville Beach unique event and highly sought after; and we look forward to working with everyone to deliver another first class destination, tourism activity.

Businesses are welcome to promote their services and community groups are invited to be part of the event delivery. We are always seeking local products for promotions and local tourism information to encourage families to return to the area.

Hendo’s Legacy

In 2021 one of our Enduro athletes tragically suffered a cardiac situation and passed away during the run on Overall Drive. His name was Michael Henderson from the Armidale Tri Club. Michael was racing that weekend and supported by his best mate Paul, who had just suffered a heart attack himself a few months prior. Both of these lads are long-term athletes, cyclists, runners and swimmers.

Michael’s wife, kids and his triathlete friends have started an education program for endurance based athletes, especially those that are slightly older (read masters). They want a legacy, and a purpose for Michael’s (Hendo’s) death, and they want to help save other athlete’s lives.

So to celebrate Hendo’s legacy, we want each of you to book a check-up with your doctor – and get the Hendo Heart Check done. Since the Club have been promoting these check-ups locally, two other athletes have already been diagnosed with issues.

Paul said…

Both Michael and I thought we were good to go… having been training with Retro.

Little did we know what we took as fatigue from training was our LAD artery developing a blockage.

No one is immune as we did not meet the usual risk factors.

American Ironman champion Tim O’Donnell suffered the same incident the week after Hendo at the Enduro at Challenge Miami at 40 years of age.

Everyone is different so the main point is to listen to your body and not push through as athletes tend to do given their training.

The Australian Red Cross has more information regarding Heart Health Checks which is a good start with your GP, then referrals to Cardiologist if warranted.”

You can read more here – https://www.health.harvard.edu/heart-health/the-danger-of-silent-heart-attacks.

So we urge all of our Tweed Enduroists no matter your age or fitness level, go and get your Hendo Heart Check done.

In 2023 the Tweed Enduro donated their first defibrillator to the local Pottsville community.
